Content Pipeline Tool
Transforming the content creation workflow for a team of 30+ content creators at the worlds leading cyber security training company, SANS Institute.
The SANS Institute is the most trusted and by far the largest source of information security training and security certification in the world; its programmes now reaching more than 165,000 security professionals around the globe. This requires the organisation to be able to regularly develop high-quality training material to keep up with the ever-changing and ever-evolving cyber security landscape.
Until recently, SANS was using existing content management tools that were disrupting and inhibiting their vision to efficiently deliver the best possible content, and thereby causing developer frustration. The organisation was looking for an improved content pipeline tool to match the quality of the products they produce.
SANS therefore came to Spinning Fox with a request to help them produce a new, singular tool that would streamline their processes, reduce the chances of error, and increase efficiency in the delivery of new content. This gave us another excellent opportunity to partner with the world leader in security awareness to develop infrastructure to support their challenging vision.
SANS set us the challenge of transforming the content creation workflow for a team of video editors to improve both efficiency of delivery and quality of output. We used our design sprint process to create and build a web based application with a variety of interesting technical solutions that has completely upgraded how the team work.

After consultation with the client, we delivered a completely web-based solution that now allows the SANS content team to create new projects, manage the translation of all material in up to 33 different languages, quality assure all videos, subtitles, quizzes and written content, and monitor the status and progress of all work.
We made use of our Design Sprint process to quickly understand all requirements and move to a prototype stage that could be tested on all users. We then used an agile delivery methodology, working in 10-day sprints, to deliver the web-based solution.
As part of the solution we also created an API, allowing all of the content to be turned into a SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) file ready for ingestion into a SANS or client-based Learning Management System.
What we delivered
- A web-based workflow management tool which helps the team manage the complex creation of videos with embedded multi-language subtitles, quizzes and much more.
- Integration with a third party tool to manage realtime subtitle translation into 30+ languages.
- A complex API which turns videos and content into fully compliant SCORM files ready for final delivery into the SANS or client-based Learning Management System.
Since its adoption into the SANS Security Awareness content team, the pipeline tool has allowed their developers to substantially improve the efficiency and quality of content production. The new, automated quality assurance approach means that mistakes found through translation have been significantly reduced.
The solution provided requires fewer individuals to help with delivery of content, as the tool involves less manual input from staff, due to the level of automation built in.
SANS now has one of the most aggressive content pipelines in terms of velocity, content updating capability, and quality. This tool has hugely increased efficiency, and we are delighted to say that the technology can now keep up with the company’s enterprising and bold ambitions.
We have now been asked to work with SANS to continually iterate and further extend the capabilities of the tool as they strive to make their content delivery approach even more efficient.
